KKH LAUNCHES VIRAL VIDEO AND CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
18 October 2011, Singapore: A short filmlet with mother and daughter in conversation, trying to overcome the reluctance often noted with the word ‘breast’, ends with the message “Don’t be shy. Lets talk about it.” Produced in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month (B-CAM), this film is set to make its way into households in Singapore and beyond, encouraging women and their families to shed false impressions and inhibitions related to breast screening and breast cancer, and to be more conscious and proactive about monitoring breast health.

CHILD-FRIENDLY HOSPITAL GUIDE MARKS CHILDREN’S DAY AT KKH

New KKH book to help ease hospital stay for young patients

7 October 2011, Singapore: More than 150 young inpatients at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) received a complimentary copy of a specially authored children’s guide to hospitals, to mark Children’s Day today. Titled What Happens to Me at the Hospital? this book, is written by Associate Professor Anette Jacobsen, Chairman, Division of Surgery at KKH and illustrated by award-winning illustrator, Mr Patrick Yee.

The copies received by the children were personally signed by the author and presented by Professor Ivy Ng, Chief Executive Officer, KKH, and A/Prof Jacobsen.

STUDY SHOWS ROTAVIRUS CAUSES NEARLY 40% OF ACUTE GASTROENTEROLOGY HOSPITALISATIONS AMONG YOUNG CHILDREN IN SINGAPORE

Low awareness about rotavirus and immunisation among parents

29 September 2011, Singapore: – Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis (GE) in children below the age of five, accounting for 39.5% of GE-related hospitalisations here.

This finding was revealed in a local hospital-based study led by Professor Phua Kong Boo, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology Service at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH).

STUDY SUGGESTS FACTORS THAT MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF MISCARRIAGE

11 July 2011, Singapore - The age of the expectant parents, a previous history of miscarriage and a low blood progesterone (hormonal) level during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage, among expectant mothers with threatened miscarriage. These findings emerged from a study, the first of its kind to be conducted among pregnant women in Singapore.

The study, jointly carried out by KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School (Duke-NUS), aimed to assess the demographic and socioeconomic factors that may increase the risk of miscarriage in early pregnancy.

New programme educates and empowers parents to manage difficult behaviours

1 March 2011, Singapore : A new community-level programme is being introduced to help parents of children with developmental needs. The three-year pilot programme, put together by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s Department of Child Development (KKH DCD) and Parenting Research Centre (PRC), Australia, with the support of National Council of Social Service (NCSS), and Temasek Cares, will impart an evidence-based educational programme designed to equip parents and caregivers to understand their child’s difficult behaviour, develop their own ways to manage them effectively and prevent the further development of behavioural concerns.

MULTI-AGENCY COLLABORATION FOR CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT – PAEDIATRICS, PSYCHIATRY AND NEUROSCIENCE

Three facilities supporting children’s mental health and development – REACH (Response, Early Intervention and Assessment in Community Mental Health) East, the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences’ (SICS) Neurocognitive Development Centre, and the Satellite Clinic of KKH Department of Child Development (DCD) – are now co-located on the 11th floor of St Andrew’s Community Hospital (SACH) in Simei. Siting these facilities together will facilitate the collaborative efforts by psychiatrists, researchers and paediatricians in early intervention, research and programmes to treat and improve the mental health and development of children in Singapore.

STUDY IDENTIFIES GESTATIONAL WEIGHT GAIN FOR POSITIVE CHILDBIRTH OUTCOMES

Singapore – A study, first of its kind here, has indicated that gestational weight gain (GWG), if kept within an optimal range, may help to achieve positive outcomes of childbirth and prevent complications for mother and baby.

The study, a collaboration between KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, was conducted on data from 1,592 women who had their first antenatal visit in their first trimester at KKH from January to April 2008. Its objective was to observe trends in the pre-pregnancy and GWG of pregnant women.
