Objective
KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital is a much sought after centre for the training of obstetric ultrasound and high risk obstetric as it:
- Has a high volume of patient load passing through KK Antenatal Diagnostic Centre, Antenatal Monitoring Centre, Obstetric Clinics and Delivery Suite
- Maintains a very high standard of practice through regular audits
- Has a keen interest in research and teaching
- Is accredited as a RCR/RCOG training centre for obstetric ultrasound
- Is accredited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation for First Trimester Screening Programme
On completion,
- Fellows in basic and advanced obstetric ultrasound training will be awarded with certificate of accreditation upon successful completion of the training, theory and practical tests.
- Fellows in fetal medicine training and high risk obstetric training will be given a letter of testimony upon successful completion of the training, theory and practical tests.
- Review of program and feedback session.
- Completion of projects assigned.
Course Contents
Module 1 - Obstetric Ultrasound Training
Three levels of ultrasound training are available. These include:
A. Basic Obstetric Ultrasound Training
The basic obstetric ultrasound training is targeted at sonographers and obstetricians with little or no prior obstetric ultrasound training. The programme duration is six months, and the training syllabus includes:
- Theory lectures
- Theoretical test
- Supervised ultrasound training on at least 20 each of:
- Dating of pregnancy
- Localization of site of pregnancy
- Biometry
- Placental localization
- Amniotic fluid index
- Birth Defect Clinic
- Log book accreditation
- Involvement in research projects
- Unsupervised performance of basic ultrasound to be done at trainee’s own centre
B. Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound
The advanced obstetric ultrasound training is targeted at sonographers and obstetricians with prior basic ultrasound training and accreditation. The programme duration is 12 months, and the training syllabus includes:
- Theory lectures
- Theoretical test
- Observe screening ultrasound at least 100 cases
- Perform supervised screening ultrasound at least 100 cases
- Birth Defect Clinic
- Log book accreditation
- Involvement in research
- Perform unsupervised screening ultrasound at least 100 cases to be done at trainee’s own centre
C. Fetal Medicine Training
The fetal medicine training is targeted at obstetricians with an interest in sub-specialising in fetal medicine and with prior advanced ultrasound training and accreditation. The programme duration is 12 months, and the training syllabus includes:
- Theory lectures
- Theoretical test
- Fetal Medicine Clinics two sessions per week (Refer Annex A)
- Monochorionic twin pregnancies clinic two sessions per week
- Prenatal Invasive Procedures
- Fetal Therapy
- Birth Defect Clinic one session per week
- Involvement in research projects – first author of two obstetric ultrasound papers
Module 2 – High Risk Obstetric and Perinatal Medicine
The High Risk Obstetric training is a six-month programme involving clinical attachments, regular teaching rounds, regular presentations and research projects.
- High Risk Obstetrics
Fellows are trained in screening, diagnosis and management of high risk obstetric conditions such as pre-eclampsia, preterm labour, monochorionic multiple pregnancies etc.
- Obstetric Medicine
Support from a qualified obstetric physician provides the opportunity for in-depth training for medical disorders in pregnancy.
- Perinatal Medicine
The presence of a strong team comprising MF specialists, obstetricians, Neonatologists, Anesthetists and nurses provides a basis for training in the management of complex Perinatal problems and obstetric emergencies.
