MIS Unit Fellowship Programme in Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy

Objective

The KK Women's and Children's Hospital MIS Unit Fellowship Programme is a comprehensive postgraduate training programme in laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. With defined syllabus covering anatomy, energy sources, ergonomics, tissue handling and suturing technique, the Fellowship Programme aims to advance the Fellow’s laparoscopic and hysteroscopic skills to the next level. The Fellowship Programme also incorporates an academic syllabus focusing on research leading to a publication by the end of the Fellowship Programme.

The mission of the KK Women's and Children's Hospital MIS Unit Fellowship Programme is to help Fellows gain the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to provide their patients with safe, high-quality and cost-effective Minimally Invasive Surgery Treatment.

Course Contents

Duration Month
From six-month to 1-year

Month one to three

  • Report to supervising officer, MIS Unit
  • Briefing of department activities and role in department
  • Orientation tour of hospital facilities
  • Pelvic Trainer session to evaluate level of skill
  • Attend all operative sessions and clinic sessions of unit
  • Lectures and tutorials on the Essentials of Laparoscopy and
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Second Surgical Assistant at operative cases
  • Hands-on Pelvic Trainer to practice specific laparoscopic skills including;
    • Basic maneuvers with instruments
    • Basic scissors techniques
    • Tissue Handling Techniques
    • Laparoscopic Suturing Techniques

Performance assessment at the end of three months.

Month four to 12

  • Attend to MIS Clinic independentlyPerform outpatient hysteroscopic services independently
  • First assistant to operative cases and first surgeon in selected cases
  • Lectures and Tutorials on Advanced Laparoscopic &
  • Hysteroscopic Techniques
  • Hands-on teaching of Advanced Laparoscopic & Hysteroscopic procedures
  • Participate in teaching and departmental activities
  • Review of complications focusing on learning points
  • Attend workshops and conference organized by MIS Unit
  • Formulate a research project for publication

End of fellowship programme

  • Review of program and feedback session
  • Completion of project with submission of publication
  • Preparation of report

For Whom

Doctors who would like to visit the MIS Unit for the purpose of observing Advanced Laparoscopic and Hysteroscopic Surgery can apply for the MIS Unit Observer-ship Programme. The period of attachment is limited to three months.

Gynaecologists who are interested to have clinical exposure and hands-on surgical training can apply for the MIS Unit Fellowship Programme. Completion of the MRCOG exam is preferred and the period of attachment is at least six months.

Pre-requisite for MIS Unit Observer-ship Programme

Applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. At least one year of satisfactory completion of housemanship/internship
  2. Completed specialist examination and recognized in their country of practice.
  3. Currently practising in country of origin

Pre-requisite for MIS Unit Fellowship Programme

Applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Proficiency in English Language (both spoken and written) is compulsory (TOEFL paper-based test score of 600)
  2. Completion of MRCOG Exams, MRANZCOG Exams or ACOG Board Exams equivalent
  3. Completed Specialist Examination and recognized as O&G Specialist in their country of practice
  4. Currently practising in country of origin

Course Fee

Fees will be determined upon application.

Funding

All funding for MIS Unit Observer-ship Programme and MIS Unit Fellowship Programme will be at the applicant’s expense. Arrangement for conference and workshop subsidies can be arranged for applicants of MIS Unit Fellowship Programme during the period of training.
