Paediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship
Objective
Minimum six month to one year clinical fellowship in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

- To be exposed to the common practices and cases seen in a busy paediatric emergency department

- Within the CICU there are daily (Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Radiology) and weekly (Infectious Diseases, Respiratory) teaching rounds conducted by the relevant specialist teams.
- To practice paediatric intubations on a controlled environment through attachments to Day Surgery under the charge of the Paediatric Anaesthetists (at least ten to 15 such intubations)
- To be exposed to paediatric emergency practice through participation in the department’s monthly mortality and morbidity rounds and journal club etc
- To be exposed to paediatric resuscitation through participation in the department’s mock code sessions run with the CE nurses, including sessions at the Paediatric Simulation & Training Centre (PSTC).
- To be involved in the hospital’s Paediatric Trauma Programme, including acute management of serious and common paediatric trauma cases, including familiarity and training in the use of FAST in children.
- To be exposed to various aspects of Childhood Injury Surveillance and Prevention.
- To be attached to the Drug & Poison Information Centre (DPIC) as a toxicology fellow for exposure to the common and sundry poisons and drug calls to DPIC.
- To be attached to KK’s Ask-A-Nurse service providing backup for nurses who attended to various paediatric telephone queries about a variety of common paediatric medical queries from the public.
- To participate in at least one Paediatric ED research project in the department and present the paper either in the hospital annual scientific meeting or in regional and international meetings.
- To be exposed to the hospital’s paediatric involvement in paediatric disaster preparedness, ie mass casualty preparedness both for conventional and Hazmat scenarios.
- To be exposed to the hospital’s involvement in national & regional paediatric disaster relief programme.
- To be exposed to the various levels of paediatric ED teaching programmes both for doctors and nurses and pre-hospital staff (eg paramedics).
Method
Hands on clinical fellowship attachment – credentialing by Singapore Medical Council.

Pre-requisite
Candidates must be medical graduates from recognized medical schools as determined by the Singapore Medical Council or a degree that can be registered by the Singapore Medical council.
Candidates must be board certified by their respective institutions in Paediatric Medicine or Emergency Medicine or have the equivalent recognition by the relevant national medical bodies.
Success of the fellowship application is also contingent on approval by the Singapore Medical Council for a temporary medical practicing license.

From six months to one year fellowship

First Aid Course for Childcare Teachers
Objective
A train-the-trainer course for first aid trainers, credentialled by the National First Aid Council, to be equipped to train childcare teachers in paediatric firsy aid and care.
Course Contents
A one-day train-the-trainers course in Paediatric first aid with subsequent observership attachments to Children’s Emergency for the trainee-trainers.

Paediatric Resuscitation & Life Support Course PeaRLS (in association with Society of Emergency Medicine In Singapore, SEMS)
Objective
To train and equip prehospital healthcare workers in basic hands-on management of acute paediatric emergencies and resuscitation.

Research
All fellows attached to the CICU for 6 months or more are expected to complete at least one research project. It is expected that the fellow will submit completed work to conferences and scientific meetings. Research will be conducted under the supervision of the faculty who will also help source for funding if needed.
Teaching Activity
Fellows are expected to participate in the teaching activity carried out by the unit for junior medical staff, medical students and nurses. This includes lectures, bedside tutorials, and hands-on sessions with technology. Formal presentations at departmental, division and hospital meetings will be strongly encouraged and supported. Fellows that are with the unit for >1 year will be expected to contribute some learning material, such as sections in the CICU handbook, and lectures or worksheets for the medical officers.
