Programme

Attachment to Nutrition and Dietetics Department (4 weeks, consisting of 1 week of observation and 3 weeks of project work).

Description

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics provides nutritional assessment and counseling services for women, children and neonates, in inpatient and outpatient settings, as part of their holistic management.

The main groups of patients seen are very low-birth-weight neonates; infants and children with poor growth; feeding issues; constipation; overweight; type 1 diabetes and inborn errors of metabolism; women with gestational diabetes; type 2 diabetes; hyperlipidemia and cancer-related complications (e.g. poor appetite, low protein stores).

Apart from patient counseling, the dietitians also provide nutrition education for staff and public as well as nutrition consultancy to external organisations.

The department is staffed by 6 dietitians and 2 support staff.

Entry Criteria
  • Students: Completed 3 years of BSc course leading to Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or Dietetics, or completed 1 year of MSc course leading to Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics or Dietetics
  • Professionals: Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or Dietetics

Expected learning / learning objectives

On completion, the trainee will:

  • Understand the range of dietetics services offered in a women’s and children’s hospital
  • Understand the roles of the dietitian in a multidisciplinary team approach to patient management
  • Observe and obtain hands-on experience on the various roles of the dietitian, so as to gain knowledge of the skills required in the profession

Teaching Programme

Observation of dietitians in:

  • Group counseling
  • Individual counseling
  • Combined clinics (feeding clinic, weight management clinic, diabetic clinic)
  • Nutrition talks (antenatal)
  • Multi-disciplinary team meetings (catering support committee, gynaecological oncology)

Observation of food service:

  • Catering department
  • Milk room

Participate in:

  • Combined journal clubs
  • Departmental journal clubs and case study discussions

Project work:

  • Clinical audits of dietitians’ compliance to standards of care
  • Statistical support (data entry, data analysis) for patient outcome reviews
  • Development of patient education materials
