Description
KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital is a much sought after center for the training of obstetric ultrasound and high risk obstetric as it:
- Has a high volume of patient load passing through Antenatal Diagnostic Clinic and Antenatal Monitoring Clinic
- Maintains a very high standard of practice through regular audits
- Has a keen interest in research and teaching
- Is accredited as a RCR/RCOG training center for obstetric ultrasound
- Is accredited by the Fetal Medicine Foundation for First Trimester Screening Programme

Expected Learning / Learning Objectives
On completion,
- Fellows in basic and advanced obstetric ultrasound training will be awarded with certificate of accreditation upon successful completion of the training, theory and practical tests.
- Fellows in fetal medicine training and high risk obstetric training will be given a letter of testimony upon successful completion of the training, theory and practical tests.
- Review of program and feedback session.
- Completion of projects assigned.
Teaching Programme
Module 1 - Obstetric Ultrasound Training
3 levels of ultrasound training are available. These include:
- Basic Obstetric Ultrasound Training
The basic obstetric ultrasound training is targeted at sonographers and obstetricians with little or no prior obstetric ultrasound training. The programme duration is 6 months, and the training syllabus includes:
- Theory lectures
- Theoretical test
- Supervised ultrasound training on at least 20 each of:
- Dating of pregnancy
- Localization of site of pregnancy
- Biometry
- Placental localization
- Amniotic fluid index
- Birth Defect Clinic
- Log book accreditation
- Involvement in research projects
- Unsupervised performance of basic ultrasound to be done at trainee’s own centre
- Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound
The advanced obstetric ultrasound training is targeted at sonographers and obstetricians with prior basic ultrasound training and accreditation. The programme duration is 12 months, and the training syllabus includes:
- Theory lectures
- Theoretical test
- Observe screening ultrasound at least 100 cases
- Perform supervised screening ultrasound at least 100 cases
- Birth Defect Clinic
- Log book accreditation
- Involvement in research
- Perform unsupervised screening ultrasound at least 100 cases to be done at trainee’s own centre
- Fetal Medicine Training
The fetal medicine training is targeted at obstetricians with an interest in subspecialising in fetal medicine and with prior advanced ultrasound training and accreditation. The programme duration is 12 months, and the training syllabus includes:
- Theory lectures
- Theoretical test
- Fetal Medicine Clinics 2 sessions x a week (Refer Annex A)
- Monochorionic twin pregnancies clinic 2 sessions x a week
- Prenatal Invasive Procedures
- Fetal Therapy
- Birth Defect Clinic 1 session x a week
- Involvement in research projects – first author of 2 obstetric ultrasound papers
Module 2 – High Risk Obstetric Training
The High Risk Obstetric training is a 12-month programme which comprises of training in areas such as:
- Obstetric High Risk Clinic (Two sessions a week)
The Obstetric High-risk Clinic is run by the Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists twice a week on a Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The cases can be referred for a second opinion and for co-management of clinical care.
- Obstetric Medical Disorder Clinic (Three sessions a week)
- Combined Diabetic Medicine Clinic (One session a week)
Diabetic Medicine Clinic and Obstetric Medical Disorders Clinic, where obstetric medical conditions are managed conjointly with physicians from Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
- High Risk Consultation Clinic (at least one session a week)
High Risk Consultation Clinic where difficult obstetric cases are discussed in conjunction with the Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists and neonatologists on a day-to-day basis.

Visiting clinical fellowship is required to be financed by the applicant’s University or Institution before commencement of attachment.
