| The unit works in collaboration with the Division of O&G to enhance Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) services and techniques including laparoscopy and hysteroscopy.
Range of Services:
- Laparoscopic procedures for:
- Benign pelvic masses, removal of uterine, fibroids, ovarian cysts
- Incontinence surgery in collaboration with Urogynaecology Unit
- Selected malignant conditions in collaboration with the Gynaecological Oncology Unit
- Hysteroscopic procedures
- Therapeutic procedures including the removal of fibroids, septum
- Outpatient procedures; office hysteroscopy e.g. hysteroscopic sterilisation with Essure, endometrial ablation etc.
- Counselling and support services for patients undergoing minimally invasive surgical procedures
- Training endoscopic surgeons and nurses
- Tertiary level referral centre and providing consultation services to intra- and inter-hospital referrals from clinicians and surgeons
- Maintain a fellowship programme to train gynaecologists, from the Asia-Pacific region, in endoscopic surgery
- Research and development of MIS techniques and instrumentation
Duration The clinical fellowship in gynaecology surgery offers a comprehensive approach to both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic gynaecological surgery. The Unit welcomes applications for visiting fellowships for periods ranging from 3 months to 1 year. Following successful completion of the training, the Fellow will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by the Unit.

Month 1 - 3
- Report to supervising officer, MIS Unit.
- Briefing on departmental activities and role in department
- Orientation tour of hospital facilities.
- Endotrainer session to evaluate level of skill.
- Attend all operative sessions and clinics of unit
- Assist a few operative cases
- Access to dry laboratory in KK to learn and practise specific laparoscopic skills including;
- Basic manoeuvres with instruments - Basic scissors techniques - Electrosurgical techniques - Alternatives to electrosurgery
- Dry laboratory for hysteroscopic skills including:
- Biopsy techniques - Ablative techniques - Electroresection with loop
Review session to assess progress at end of 3 months and plan changes to remainder of program for Fellows here for 6 months or more.
Month 4 - 12
- Assist at all operative and clinic sessions
- Participate in development of patient education and training material. Selection and translation of pamphlets and video tapes for teaching of doctors, paramedical staff and patients
- Participate in research, teaching and departmental activities
- Dry laboratory exercises (advanced)
- Suturing techniques (intra-corporeal & extra-corporeal) - Alternatives to suturing
- Overview of duties of theatre nurse and theatre technician. Areas to be covered:
- Laparoscopy: Diagnostic and operative procedures in
- Investigation of pain
- Treatment and investigation of infertility
- Management of benign pelvic masses
- Management of endometriosis
- Hysteroscopy: Diagnostic hysteroscopy
- Management of menorrhagia
- Resection of fibroids
- Ablative procedures
- Metroplasty
- Office procedures
- Awake laparoscopy
- Office hysteroscopy
One session (full day) at the animal laboratory (Experimental Surgery Unit) to polish up on operative skills. (Optional for the Fellow on 3-month programme: additional cost of S$300).
End of Fellowship Programme

The Unit also welcomes visiting observers for periods ranging from 1 week to 1 month.
Expected learning / learning objectives
The objective of this fellowship is to expose the Fellow to the basic understanding of the various forms of MIS surgery, to familiarise the Fellow with various laparoscopic and hysteroscopic techniques and instruments.
The training programme thus arms the Fellow with the up-to-date knowledge of Minimally Invasive Surgery and also kindles the scientific temperament of the Fellow by way of active academic discussion, journal clubs and publications

Teaching Programme

Training and Teaching The Fellow will gain extensive experience in all aspects of gynaecological MIS surgery: MIS cystectomy, MIS hysterectomy, MIS myomectomy, MIS lymph node dissection and various hysteroscopic procedures.
The Fellow will be expected to continue with existing retrospective research, to set up prospective trials, which may be continued by subsequent fellows, and to initiate basic research projects, which may be aided by other junior staff in the hospital. The Fellow will be expected as well to take part and to contribute to the teaching of the junior staff.
The Fellow will be provided a protected half-day each week for scholarly activities. He/she will be expected to make presentations at national/international meetings and initiate clinical studies leading to publications in index journals.

Evaluation The fellow's progress in knowledge, clinical and operative skills, and ethical management of patients will be evaluated on a continuous basis by the faculty involved in the training. Formal evaluation of the fellow's progress will be at a meeting of the MIS faculty. The fellow will be debriefed following at the end of the fellowship by the Coordinator of the Programme.
