DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC MEDICINE

The Children's Hospital runs a 445-bed paediatric inpatient service. More than half of these beds belong to the Department of Paediatric Medicine, which comprises of 12 different subspecialties including General and Ambulatory Medicine service.

The Children's Hospital sees about 20,000 inpatients and 120,000 outpatients a year, a large proportion being general and ambulatory paediatric work.

The department is staffed by 32 subspecialty senior staff and 2 full time ambulatory physicians looking after a wide range of disorders spanning primary to secondary and tertiary care.

The subspecialty services include Cardiology, Critical Care, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General and Ambulatory Medicine, Genetics, Haematology / Oncology, Infectious Diseases / Travel and Vaccine, Neurology, Nephrology, Rheumatology / Immunology / Allergy, and Respiratory / Sleep Medicine.

Training Programmes for Foreign-Trained Doctors
The following training programmes are available in the Department of Paediatric Medicine for foreign-trained doctors.
 
Teaching Programme
  • Didactic core lectures for general paediatric conditions every 6 months
  • Paediatric Medicine journal club
  • Paediatric Medicine case conference
  • Paediatric Medicine Weekly CICU rounds
  • Monthly invited speakers
  • Fortnightly X-ray round
  • Weekly bedside tutorials and topic discussion
  • Monthly hospital-wide conference
  • Subspecialty teaching e.g. weekly cardiac conference, neuroradiology round, respiratory rounds etc.
 
The following training programmes are for Advanced Paediatric Fellows or Subspecialty Training Fellows
Basic Paediatric Fellowship
  • Qualifications:
    • M Med (Paeds)
    • MRCPCH or equivalent from country of origin
  • Minimum one year attachment as medical officer (paid)
  • 2 monthly rotation to various specialties
  • Night duties
  • Clinics
  • On completion, candidate gets:
    • Certificate of employment as fellow, or
    • Potential for extension, with view of posting to relevant departmets
Advanced Paediatric Fellowship
  • Qualifications:
    • M Med (Paeds)
    • MRCPCH or recognised equivalent
  • 1 - 2 year attachment (paid)
  • With possible subspecialty training in relevant areas, 2 monthly rotation for first 3 months (maximum), then 6 months to area of specialty
  • Night duties
  • Clinics
  • On completion, candidate gets:
    • Certificate of advanced training, or
    • Potential for acceptance into Advanced Specialist Training in Singapore
Paediatric Subspecialty Training
  • Qualifications:
    • M Med (Paeds)
    • MRCPCH or equivalent from country of origin
  • 3 months - 1 year of attachment to subspecialty (sponsor required)
  • Attachment to service, or related services as specified
  • Night duties / clinics if required
  • Hands-on may be allowed for attachment or more than 3 - 6 months if applicable
  • On completion, candidate gets a certificate of training in specialised area.
