Sleep Study / Pulmonary Function Testing

Description

To provide an opportunity for pulmonary / sleep technologists to increase their knowledge and expertise in pulmonary function testing and polysomnography

Entry Criteria
  • Practising respiratory / sleep Technologist with at least 1 year working experience
  • Vaccinated against Hepatitis B and Chicken Pox
Expected learning / learning objectives

On completion, the trainee will:
  • To understand the range of respiratory services offered in KK Women’s And Children’s Hospital
  • Observe and obtain hands-on experience on the various pulmonary function tests and sleep studies, so as to gain knowledge of the skills required in the profession
  • To learn how to identify and troubleshoot any performance errors

Teaching Programme

Week 1             Pulmonary Function Tests

  • Overview of Allergy & Respiratory Laboratory
  • Introduction to Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
  • Observation of respiratory technologist performing :Spirometry
    • Plethysmography / Lung Volume
    • Diffusion Capacity (Single-breath)
    • Exercise Challenge
    • Skin Prick (Food / Environmental Factors)
    • Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV)
    • Maximal Respiratory Pressure (MIPs & MEPs)
      • Hands-on-training on pulmonary function technique
      • Infection control & quality control measures
      • Attachment to National Asthma Shared Care (NASC) clinic
Week 2                        Polysomnography
  • Overview of Sleep Laboratory
  • Observation of sleep technologist performing in:
    • Patient set-up
    • Recording & troubleshooting
    • Calibration (patient vs. sleep monitoring device)
    • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)
    • Oxygen and PAP titration
      • Hands-on-training on patient “set-up”
      • Scoring of raw data
      • Attachment to Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) Education Centre
