Description

The current neonatal department started as two parallel neonatal units since 1990 in the old KKH. Since the building of the KK Women's and Children's Hospital in 1997, we have amalgamated as one department with currently about 13,000 newborns delivered per year. The department serves a large and very high risk obstetric population and is one of the hospital in the world with the largest number of deliveries per year. We offer comprehensive training in neonatology ranging from perinatal care, neonatal intensive and special care and neurodevelopmental follow up of premature babies.

The Department of Neonatology has 24 neonatal intensive care and 60 special care beds and a wide range of specialist outpatient clinics. There is a strong liaison with high-risk obstetrics with a well-developed Birth Defect Clinic and High-Risk pregnancy consult service. Our perinatal mortality, neonatal mortality and morbidity rates are comparable to developed countries. We are one of the few Asian centres with the Vermont Oxford Network for international benchmarking. Furthermore there is strong support from in-house paediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. The department has participated in many multicentered randomised controlled trials in both perinatal and neonatal areas of research.

We have well-equipped conference and teaching areas and IT support for teaching and training. There is also a neonatal library with full range of reference materials available. Each trainee has his / her own supervisor who will meet regularly to assess learning and training. Training is approached with various techniques to ensure quality and an atmosphere of learning.
