The programme provides:

  1. Clinical exposure and teachings on diagnostic approach and management of complex renal cases both at inpatient and outpatient levels
  2. Training where applicable (paediatric subspecialty training) on procedures required of nephrologists such as renal biopsy and peritoneal dialysis
  3. Guidance in the design and critical analysis of projects and clinical studies on renal disease

Description
Up to 6 months –
Advanced paediatric training

Nephrology training of up to 6 months with possibility of leading to subspecialised nephrology training (excluding renal biopsy and dialysis)

1-year posting
Subspecialised (nephrology) training
  • Training of up to 1 year which include all aspects of peadiatric nephrology including renal biopsy and histological interpretation as well as dialysis methods and prescriptions.
  • Training in other procedures including acute peritoneal dialysis procedure and prescription. Continuous veno-venous haemodialysis (CVVH) is also included. Part of training may also include an adult renal centre

Expected learning / learning objectives

The aim of the programme is to provide a broad based environment in a Children's Hospital / referral centre, in which the fellow will develop into an independent and competent paediatric nephrologist with expertise in patient care, teaching and research.

Teaching Programme

Fellows are expected to participate actively in learning, presentations and research:-

  1. Clinical bed-side teachings during renal ward rounds and outpatient clinics
  2. Weekly grand renal round including discussion of difficult cases and management problems
  3. Departmental teachings:
  4. Renal cases are discussed on rotation basis with other subspecialties which include case presentation, journal presentation and morbidity round
  5. Research is mainly clinical-based including clinical trials, demographic studies and outcome analysis. Database for renal disease are also being set up. Areas of interest include: acute pyelonephritis and reflux nephropathy, voiding dysfunction and lupus nephrities
