Allergy & Respiratory Laboratory and Sleep Laboratory
- for pulmonary / sleep technologists who want to increase their knowledge and expertise in pulmonary function testing and polysomnography

Respiratory Medicine Fellowship Programme

The programme provides the opportunity to:

  1. Be exposed to childhood respiratory diseases and its management
  2. Supervised training in performing flexible bronchoscopy
  3. Supervised training in managing sleep disorders and reading sleep studies

 

Duration
Description
1-year posting
  • Conduct 2 – 3 sessions per week of the ambulatory clinics consisting of the general respiratory referral clinics, high risk asthma clinic, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and the sleep clinic, under the supervision of a respiratory consultant
  • Rostered to run the respiratory consult service
  • 1 month rotation to the pulmonary function laboratory
  • 2 months attachment to the High Dependency Ward
  • Observe or assist in flexible bronchoscopies
  • Observe or assist in an overnight polysomnogram
6-month posting
  • Conduct 2 – 3 sessions per week of the ambulatory clinics consisting of the general respiratory referral clinics, high risk asthma clinic, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and the sleep clinic, under the supervision of a respiratory consultant
  • Rostered to run the respiratory consult service
  • 1 month rotation to the pulmonary function laboratory

3-month posting

  • 2 weeks rotation to the pulmonary function laboratory
  • 1 month attachment to the High Dependency Ward

Expected learning / learning objectives

For one-year posting:

Upon completion, the trainee should be able to manage acute and chronic respiratory problems with some confidence. He should gain an understanding of pulmonary function tests and their interpretation as well as observe or performed flexible bronchoscopies and an understanding of polysomnography and sleep-related disorders.

For six-month posting:

Upon completion, the trainee should be able to manage acute and chronic respiratory problems with some confidence. He should gain an understanding of pulmonary function tests and their interpretation as well as observe flexible bronchoscopies and overnight polysomngrams.

For three-month posting:

Upon completion, the trainee should be manage to manage acute and chronic respiratory problems with an emphasis on asthma.

Teaching Programme

  • Respiratory lectures on normal lung physiology
  • Clinical assessment of lung function
  • Clinically relevant laboratory assessment of lung structure and function (radiographic assessments, nuclear medicine scans, bronchoscopy)
  • Diagnosis of pulmonary disease through ambulatory clinics and the consult service
  • Diagnosis of sleep-related disorders through sleep clinics
