The Paediatric Rheumatology Service sees an average of 70 news cases each year. The types of conditions seen include Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), Vasculitis, Reactive Arthritis, and Septic Arthritis. We also provide investigations for limb aches and joint pains as well as suspected immunological / autoimmune disease.

The Rheumatology Service has close links with the Paediatric Immunology/Allergy Service and is affiliated with the adult rheumatology, immunology, allergy unit at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

3 – 12 months posting
  • Outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations, combined clinic
  • Hands-on for intra-synovial injections

Expected learning / learning objectives

The Fellow is expected to

  • Observe and co-manage outpatient cases
  • Co-see and co-manage inpatient referrals
  • Learn intra-synovial aspirations and injections
  • Participate in guided journal club, teaching sessions
  • Participate in local research, studies, and present findings as appropriate
  • Observe physiotherapy session in gym, hydrotherapy, making of splints and orthotics
  • Participate in combined clinic
  • Attend uveitis clinic, renal, eye, dermatology clinic as appropriate
  • Attend local lectures or programme in rheumatology
  • Participate in some support group activities for children e.g. Juvenile Arthritis Club, Juvenile Lupus Club)
  • Observe and attend allergy clinics on drug and food allergies
  • Perform skin prick testing
  • Observe in desensitisation challenges and other relevant treatment

Teaching Programme

The Fellow will be actively involved in

  • Information Rheumatology - immunology bedside and clinic teaching with hands-on experience
  • Formal lectures/teaching on Rheumatology-allergy – currently incorporated into departmental Medical Officer (MO) beside tutorials, MO trainee core lecture series, exam slide quiz, orientation lecture and department’s journal club
  • Paediatric department teaching – morbidity, mortality and CICU rounds, journal club, monthly invited speakers, X-ray round, hospital conference
  • Teaching at GP updates, public forum, parents and children of JAC, JLC at club activities
