The fellowship will provide opportunities for hands-on experience in paediatric trauma and a variety of paediatric orthopaedic and spinal conditions.

Entry Criteria

Orthopaedic Surgeons who are in the final year of training or who have completed their orthopaedic training are eligible to apply as a Visiting Observer. This position does not have primary patient management responsibilites.

Orthopaedic surgeons who have a Registrable Basic Medical Degree are eligible to apply as Clinical Fellow. Please refer to www.smc.gov.sg for the list of Registrable Basic Medical Degrees.

Teaching Programme
 
The fellow will spend 6 months here working in a similar capacity as a Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery. He/she will attend teaching sessions and participate in clinical work and in the operating theatre. He/she will also do a small clinical research project.

Formal Teaching Sessions

Monday mornings Teaching for Orthopaedic trainees
Tuesday mornings Orthopaedic Teaching Session
Thursday mornings Fracture Round

 
Clinic Sessions

The fellow will be assigned clinic sessions to observe/assist consultants throughout the week.
  
Operating Sessions
 
The fellow will be assigned operating sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays to assist and observe operations.
 
Combined Clinics
 
The following combined clinics are held monthly/bi-monthly:

  • Neurology
  • Brachial Plexus Palsy
  • Spina Bifida
  • Spine Clinic
Expected learning / learning objectives
 
By the end of the training, trainee should be able to recognise and manage the following in a Paediatric Orthopaedic context:

  • Soft tissue physiology and repair
  • Bone healing and grafting
  • Perioperative medicine
  • Imaging
  • Epidemiology
  • Prosthetics and orthotics
  1. Systemic Disorders
  • Metabolic bone disease
  • Genetic disorders and bone dyslpasias
  • Oncology
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Infection
  1. Trauma

  2. Regional conditions
  • Upper extremity, lower extremity and spine
  1. Lectures
  • Presentations at least twice a month
  • In-house lectures twice weekly
  1. Research
  • Clinical review
