The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia provide services for a wide variety of surgical specialities; General Surgery, Orthopaedic, ENT, Eye, Plastic, Dental, Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgery and remote services as in Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Angiography.

We have a Pain Service team looking after both acute and chronic pain children.

Duration

The fellowship programme is of six months to one year’s duration

Entry Criteria

The candidate must:

  • Have a postgraduate degree or its equivalent in anaesthesia
  • Have a minimum of 3 years anaesthesia experience
  • Be competent in the English language and familiar with English medical terms

Expected learning / learning objectives

On completion, the fellow will be able to

  1. Provide safe anaesthesia care for infants and children undergoing routine surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  2. Resuscitate neonates, infants and children
  3. Manage children on the acute pain service
  4. Provide critical peri-operative care for neonates, infants and children

Teaching Programme

Learn about the anatomical and physiological changes which take place during growth from neonate to a young child and its effects on anaesthesia.

  1. The fellow should learn:
  2. To resuscitate the paediatric patient.
  3. Perioperative management; preoperative assessment and preparation anaesthetic management and postoperative care of paediatric patient
  4. Ambulatory anaesthesia
  5. Management of surgical emergencies in children. This includes stabilisation of the patient. e.g. fluid resuscitation prior to induction.
  6. Regional Techniques: local and regional anaesthetic methods
  7. Acute Pain Management
  8. Neonatal physiology, pathophysiology and applied pharmacology techniques. Special problems of the preterm and es-premie baby
  9. Paediatric medical and surgical problems including common syndromes and their implications for the anaesthetist.
  10. Safe transport of paediatric patients.
  11. Selection, management and monitoring of children for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures carried out under anaesthesia or sedation.
  12. Presentation skills by participating in teaching sessions.
