Expected learning / learning objectives

The objective of this programme is to expose the Fellow to a basic understanding of the various conditions in Neonatal and Paediatric Surgery.

The training programme will equip the Fellow with up-do-date clinical and practical skills by didactic and bedside teaching, as well as practical Clinical work in the Wards, Clinics and Operating Theatres. The Fellow will participate in active academic discussion, journal clubs, publications, workshops, conferences and research. There will be excellent opportunities in research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, networking and participation in regional and international workshops and conferences.

The Fellowship is intended to run for a 12-monthly period with possible extension on a case-by-case basis"

Teaching Programme

  • Training and Teaching

The Fellow will gain extensive experience in all aspects of paediatric surgery –preventive, conservative, surgical and post-surgical management.

The Fellow will be expected to continue with existing retrospective research, to set up prospective trials, which may be continued by subsequent fellows, and to initiate basic research projects, which may be aided by other junior staff in the hospital. The Fellow will be expected as well to take part and to contribute to the teaching of the junior staff.

The Fellow will be provided a protected half-day each week for scholarly activities. He/she will be expected to make presentations at national/international meetings and initiate clinical studies leading to publications in index journals.
  • Evaluation

The fellow's progress in knowledge, clinical and operative skills, and ethical management of patients will be evaluated on a continuous basis by the faculty involved in the training. Fellows and Trainees are expected to keep a Logbook updated regularly and vetted every 6 months by their Supervisor. Formal evaluation of the fellow's progress will be made by the Paediatric Surgical faculty, and the fellow will be debriefed by the Coordinator every 6 months.
