| Training in Paediatric Endocrinology |
| The aims of the programme are to provide a broad based environment in a Children's Hospital / referral centre, in which the fellow will develop into an independent and competent paediatric endocrinologist with expertise in patient care, teaching and research. | | |
| |
| Patient Care and Services |
| The Endocrinology Service comprises a diabetes service and a general endocrine service.
We follow up 200 type 1 and 50 Type 2 diabetes cases, with an annual diabetes new case load of 25 - 30 per year. In addition, we see about 70 IGTs and 100 obese children referred for further management of obesity.
We have recently started an insulin pump service. We also see over 60 children for active growth hormone therapy.
The service supports an active neurosurgical service, the paediatric and neonatal (Level 3) ICUs, the haematology / oncology service for general paediatric endocrinology and neuroendocrinology, late effects of oncological problems, and the respiratory service (OSA patients). We also work with the Adolescent Gynaecology Service of the Women's Hospital, and the Paediatric Surgical Department of the Children's Hospital for management of ambiguous genitalia and HRT.
| |
| Research Activity |
| The service is currently involved in clinical audit and clinical research, as well as diabetes and growth hormone registry cases, and late effects of growth, and collaborative work on thyroids, obesity, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and bone mineral density. | | |

| Training Programme |
|
The Endocrinology and Diabetes fellowship is administered through the Department of Paediatric Medicine.
The programme therefore provides: |
- Clinical exposure and teaching on diagnostic approach and management of simple complex endocrine and diabetes cases both at inpatient and outpatient levels.
- Training where applicable (Paediatric Subspecialty Training) on procedures, stimulation tests, and use of diagnostic workups and insulin pumps, growth hormone administration and exposure to laboratory methods in paediatric endocrinology.
- Guidance in the design and critical analysis of projects and clinical studies on endocrinology an diabetes.
- Provide the necessary training and exposure, so that by the end of the attachment (6 months minimum), the fellow will be able to manage common childhood endocrine disorders and acute endocrine and diabetes emergencies, be familiar with endocrine stimulation testing and imaging studies, be able to order appropriate tests and basic interpretation of test results.
|
| The Endocrinology fellow will have the opportunity to manage a wide variety of inpatient endocrinology problems during a minimum training period of 6 months.
During this time, you will manage inpatients and participate in clinics and general and subspecialty ward rounds and referrals, and participate in the general paediatric roster as well as the paediatric ICU roster for calls.
There will be the opportunity to do at least one clinical research project and one presentation at department level, as well as journal clubs and internal case discussions within the diabetes service.
Fellows are encouraged to submit papers for presentation locally and abroad, and to join in Singhealth Cluster hospital teaching. One year fellows will get the opportunity to get cross exposure in adolescent gynaelogical and adult endocrine clinics as well as the annual diabetes camp run in conjunction with the Diabetic Society of Singapore.
Further laboratory based research opportunities will be available to suitable candidates with interest and aptitude for this work, as well as courses in statistics and laboratory medicine.
Paediatric endocrinology spans the breadth of paediatrics and adolescent medicine. Fellows and ASTs in Paediatric endocrinology are therefore also expected to take an active part in the training programme for general paediatrics in the Department of Paediatric Medicine.
Teaching activities in general paediatrics include those listed in General Ambulatory Paediatrics section.
| |
| Application |
| Fellows are currently accepted for 6 months, 1 - 2 years and AST training.
It is expected that overseas Fellows have already obtained a recognised postgraduate qualification in paediatric medicine, demonstrated an interest in paediatric endocrinology and will be seeking this posting as part of an overall exposure to paediatric endocrinology training.
Cross training and postings to paediatric ICU, A & E paediatrics, neonatal intensive care, paediatric neurology, paediatric respiratory medicine, school health, and haematology / oncology would be possible for selected candidates.
