| Content of Training in Gastrolenterology |
- Assessment, investigation and management of paediatric patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders e.g. acute and chronic diarrhoea, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstructive jaundice in infancy, liver failure.
- Upper GI endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, sclerotherapy of varices and polypectomy.
- Small intestinal biopsy with Watson Biopsy Capsule, partial-thickness rectal biopsy and percutaneuos liver biopsy.
- Breath Hydrogen tests
- Continuous oesophageal pH monitoring
- Review of biopsy slides, X-ray studies and isotope scans with the respective specialist on a regular basis.
- Principle and practice of enteral and parenteral nutrition.

| Method of Training |
- Clinical experience through joint management of patients in the setting of gastroenterology service, including possible hands-on experience in the case of endoscopic procedures and liver biopsy.
- Systemic lectures, tutorials and ward rounds
- Seminars, journal reading and research projects
- Laboratory experience through benchwork and laboratory based research projects.

| First Year |
- Emphasis on clinical training in general paediatric gastrolenterology at inpatient and outpatient level.
- Familiarise with radiological and radioisotope studies and laboratory tests
- Hands-on experience in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, small intestinal biopsy, rectal biopsy and percutaneous liver biopsy, breath hydrogen tests and continuous oesophageal pH monitoring
- Active involvement in nutritional support, both enteral and parenteral, of paediatric patients.

- Increasing responsibility in the management of paediatric gastroentrology patients
- Commence training in colonoscopy, polypectomy and sclerotherapy of varices
- Increasing labarotory involvement including histopathology, immunology and research.
