The department is staffed by doctors and nurses with special training in paediatric emergency care. When the patient first arrives, he will be seen by the triage nurse. The nurse will ask the parents some pertinent questions, obtain the child's vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate and respiration rate) and briefly examine him. If the child has a life-threatening or very serious illness or injury, he will be seen by a doctor promptly.
An emergency is an illness or injury which could result in serious disability or death if not treated immediately. | |

The department handles both medical and non-medical emergencies such as injury related illnesses.
There may be a carefully identified group of patients who may be treated at home without the need for hospitalisation. Observation facilities are available for this group of children in the department before they are sent home. |
