Tests Required

At the Urogynaecology Centre, the following diagnostic tests may be required in preparation for your consultation with the urogynaecologists.

These tests which are usually done on the first visit may be repeated on subsequent visits, if necessary:

Urinalysis
Urine for culture and sensitivity
Pad test / stress test
Urodynamics studies
Bladder scan
The patient will given two containers to collect her mid-stream urine samples. These samples will be sent to the laboratory for microscopic analysis and culture.

What Is…

Urinalysis

This test is done to look for protein, sugar, blood and white blood cells in the urine. Results on microscopic analysis of the urine will be available within 1 to 1 ½ hours.

Urine for culture and sensitivity

This test is done to look for the organism that causes infection of the bladder. Results for culture will be available within 3 days.

Pad Test

This test is done to confirm any leakage and to quantify the degree of urine loss. This is important in the choice of the treatment, and in assessing the treatment outcome.

This test is done only for women with complaints of incontinence.

The patient is advised to empty her bladder and she is given a pre-weighted pad to wear. She is then given 500 ml of water of drink within the next 10 - 15 minutes, after which she has to walk around the hospital premises and return 30 minutes later. She will then be instructed to perform a series of activities such as :

Climbing up and down the stairs twice
Standing up from the sitting position (10 times)
Coughing vigorously (10 times)
Jogging on the spot for 1 minute
Picking up objects from the floor (5times)

All these activities will be modified to suit the patient's age, mobility and medical conditions.

At the end of the test, the pad is removed and weighed, and the patient then passes urine into the uroflow meter (a device which measures the amount and rate of flow of the urine).

Total time for completion of the pad test : 1 hour

Stress Test

The patient will be asked to cough vigorously in a standing position to demonstrate urinary leakage and to quantify the amount of leakage.

Total time for completion of the stress test : 1 minute

Urodynamics Studies

These are tests done with the use of computer to determine the muscle activity of the bladder during filling and emptying. Urodynamics studies are useful in the following situations:

There is a mixture of urinary symptoms
An operation is being considered
Previous treatment has not been successful
The problem has recurred
For post-operative assessment

To enable this test to be done, 2 fine tubes will be inserted into the bladder - one used for filling the bladder with saline solution and the other for recording the bladder pressure. A third tube will be inserted into the rectum for recording the abdominal pressure.

These tubes are connected to the computer to monitor and record these pressures. During the test, the patient will be asked to indicate when she feels the desire to pass urine. She will also be asked to cough to demonstrate urinary incontinence. She will then pass urine into the flowmeter to complete the test.

Total time for completion of test : 30 minutes

Bladder Scan

Ultrasound scan of the bladder is used to demonstrate bladder neck mobility and to measure residual urine volume.

Total time for completion of test : 5 minutes
