| Neonatal surgery refers
to operations on children in the first month of
life, almost always on an emergency or urgent basis.
Many of these conditions are interesting and myriad,
ranging from common in-born anomalies (cardio-vascular
and gastro-intestinal) to fortunately rarer lethal
conditions. All neonatal surgeries are undertaken
by the senior staff in cooperation with the Specialist
Neonatal Medical and Paediatric Anaesthesiology
staff. The more common conditions encountered
are in the intestines, heart, and urinary system.
The gastro-intestinal conditions include "imperforate
anus" (ano-rectal malformations), Hirschsprung's
Disease, oesophageal atresia and biliary atresia.
Some patients present soon after birth with potentially
catastrophic intestinal conditions such as volvulus
neonatorum and necrotising entero-colitis.
Urological conditions may also present at birth,
such as posterior urethral valves.
In fact, many neonatal anomalies are now being
picked up during antenatal screening, both in
well mothers as well as women with too much or
too little liquor.
A regular meeting between the obstetric &
gynaecology doctors and neonatal doctors discusses
and alerts our doctors to potentially serious
problems in the pregnancies of some of the women
who attend the KKH Obstetric Clinics.
