Nose Bleeds

Nose bleeds are a common in children.

They are usually not serious conditions & result from irritation to the normally fragile surface of the nasal lining.

When there are nose bleeds:

Sit the child up and lean forward to prevent swallowing of blood
Pinch the tip of the nose
Do NOT insert tissues, gauze into the nose
If the bleeding persists for more than 15 minutes, see a doctor

For the next few days:

Avoid further irritation to the nose
Instruct the child to blow his nose gently

See doctor when:

Nose bleeds become more frequent and difficult to stop
There is blood elsewhere, e.g. in stools, urine and tears
The child seems to bruise easily or bleeds from wounds are difficult to stop
There are rashes / bruises on the skin and the child appears pale, tired, ill
