Because every woman and child deserves good health…

KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) has a long tradition caring for women and children. From its early days in 1924 as a free maternity hospital, to its present day status as Singapore’s major tertiary referral hospital for women and children, one thing remains unchanged : its dedication and commitment to improving the health of women and children.

Over the years, support from the community has played an important part in providing additional resources to care for our women and children. Some gave of their time and effort, while others donated in cash or kind. Every contribution has, in its own way, touched the lives of the women and children who receive medical treatment in KKH.

The KK Hospital Health Endowment Fund (KKHHEF)

The KKHHEF provides financial support towards needy patients, as well as education, research and disease prevention programmes targeted at women’s and children’s health. Support to the KKHHEF enables KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital to reach new levels of excellence in patient care, medical education, and research.

Registered as a charity in 2002, the KKHHEF is administered by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. A board of trustees, who serves for a term of three years, governs the fund. The board serves in an honorary capacity and receives no financial benefits from the fund. Donations made to the fund are tax exempted.

Patients in need

Most diseases strike unexpectedly, and families are often caught unprepared in facing the challenges ahead; The KKHHEF hopes that, by easing the financial burden of needy patients, their families can focus on the more important task at hand, which is to get the patients back on their feet again.

Each year, more than $1 million from the KKHHEF is directed to helping patients. The KKHHEF extends help to anyone who qualifies for financial assistance, regardless of his or her medical condition.

Like 12-year-old *Sam, who suffers from Rasmussen Encephalitis, an extremely rare form of epilepsy that strikes children under the age of ten.  Sam requires monthly admission to the hospital for intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), which helps to control the seizures. Each treatment costs $2,200.

And five-year-old *Cindy, who suffers from Turner Syndrome, a chromosomal condition affecting only females.  Cindy requires daily injections of growth hormone, costing $1,166 per month, to help her achieve optimum height eventually, as the physical growth of people with Turner Syndrome is usually affected, resulting in severe short stature.

The KKHHEF’s support is greatly appreciated by Sam’s and Cindy’s families. Sam’s father earns $1,600 a month to support his family of four, while Sam’s mother cares for him full time. Sam also attends a school for children with special needs. Cindy’s parents, both blue collar workers, cannot afford the cost of her medication.

The KKHHEF also extends support to patients suffering from paediatric cancers, women’s cancers, and women and children with HIV.

Research & Education

Spurred by a spirit of innovation and exploration, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals at KK Hospital are encouraged to search for answers to improve the healthcare of women and children.

Research enables us to find new treatments, cures and interventions. Such as a project that helped to establish home-based antibiotic administration, so that our paediatric patients can be treated at home, while saving costs. Positive results from another study enabled the hospital to implement a faster and more cost-effective screening method for thalassaemia, a genetic blood disorder, so that we can detect and prevent the serious form of the disease.

Through learning and shared experiences, the hospital’s staff keep updated on best practices and treatment methods. The KKHHEF supports programmes that contribute towards this purpose. It also provides for patient education programmes, such as educational talks and forums, which serve to enhance the wellbeing of women and children.
