Average Length of Stay of Community-Acquired Pneumonia for Children Admitted to KKH

The overall average length of stay (ALOS) for children admitted to KKH for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in 2013 was 3.00 days which is well within the set target of 3.5 days. This target has been set according to the KKH clinical pathway for pneumonia and comparable to the ALOS of 3.04 days in the audit of all children recruited into the KKH clinical pathway for pneumonia who were discharged between 1 July and 30 September 2007.

Previously, the hospital’s ALOS for this quality indicator was 3.11 in 2008. The current statistics show that the hospital has not only kept within the set target of 3.5 days but has improved further from 3.11 days.

The hospital’s ALOS of 3.00 days for children admitted for community-acquired pneumonia is shorter than the average length of stay of 3.4 days for discharges from short-stay hospitals for pneumonia (first listed diagnosis) in those under 15 years old in the United States.
