KKH Health Fund: Sub-Funds

Kidz Horizon Appeal Sub-Fund
Established in 2004 by a group of like-minded friends, the Kidz Horizon Appeal attends specifically to the medical needs of the most vulnerable in the society, such as needy children with chronic illnesses, by raising funds and volunteering towards the KKH Health Fund. The appeal has helped more than 600 needy patients alleviate their financial burden for their families and allowed them to concentrate on helping their loved ones get better.

Give to Education and Research

New cures and better ways to treat diseases can only come about with better clinical education and relentless medical research which can translate the latest discoveries from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside. KKHHF recognises the criticality of investing in clinical education and medical research for medical breakthroughs, advancements and innovation, which will make better clinical care and outcomes possible for women and children.

Make a gift to the Rare Conditions Fund

A rare disease is any disease that affects a small percentage of the population (with incidence starting from 1 in 1,500 to 2,000 individuals). Most rare diseases are genetic, and thus are present throughout the person’s entire life, even if symptoms do not immediately appear. Many rare diseases appear early in life, and about 30 percent of children with rare diseases will die before reaching their fifth birthday.

Rare diseases are long-standing, life-threatening, progressive and disabling conditions that require multi-disciplinary care. As treatment is customised, this also often translates to a heavy financial burden on top of the emotional stress that the families of these children need to go through. Your kind contributions will be a great source of help, relief and consolation, especially to these families.

Make a gift to the Vulnerable Mothers Programme

The Vulnerable Mothers Programme is one of the programmes that is supported under the KKHHF General Fund. The programme assists young mothers in need, who come from socially disadvantageous backgrounds, to be more empowered and achieve better birth outcomes for both mother and baby.

Many vulnerable mothers have irregular or no antenatal care. They put off antenatal care due to embarrassment and social stigma. For some, they are unable to afford it. Lack of mothercraft knowledge in essential aspects of childcare such as feeding, bathing, child health and child development is also a common problem among these vulnerable mothers as they are often without support from their family members. A large percentage of these mothers are also not aware of birth control options, or do not use reliable contraceptive methods.

The programme aims to fund and provide antenatal care, support the learning of mothercraft skills through post-natal home care, and prevent repeated unplanned pregnancies through greater awareness and education on birth control.

Make a gift to the Premmies Fund

KKH is the largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit facility in Singapore. Due to the high cost of ICU care, every year KKH cares for 20 to 30 cases of parents of premature babies who are unable to afford the cost of giving their babies a chance to live and develop. On average, hospitalisation in NICU ranges from two to seven months and can cost upwards of $15,000. Some of these premature babies require special formula milk, breast pumps for the mothers and other accessories and equipment that can add substantially to the financial burden on the families.

In response to these needs, Mr Tan Chin Hwee, a father of a premature baby himself, set up the Premmies Fund in 2009 within the KK Hospital Health Fund, with the objective of lightening the financial burdens of parents with premature babies. You can help further the dream of helping all premature babies grow up healthy and strong by making a gift to the Premmies Fund.

Make a gift to Child Life Therapy

Being in a hospital can be discomforting even for adults. Paediatric patients may feel even more fearful when hospitalised. To help calm them and provide a therapeutic methodology to coping with the hospital experience, KKH’s qualified child life therapists deliver coping strategies and techniques through play. The programme makes use of story-telling, games and art and craft to ease fears and assist in managing good patient outcomes. The hospital is able to provide this targeted and meaningful programme to patients at no cost, only due to the generous support of donors.
