Because every woman and child deserves good health...

“Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance.” (United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

Here at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, we believe that every woman and child deserves good health. The KKH Health Endowment Fund (KKHHEF) raises funds to help needy patients, who very often have exhausted all options and are in need of financial assistance, for their medical treatment. The fund also supports education, research and disease prevention programmes targeted at women’s and children’s health.

As KKHHEF is totally dependent on donations, on behalf of the patients, we thank the generous donors who have literally saved lives by enabling the fund to continue with its work of giving financial support to needy patients.

You can be a part of this life-saving cause; we appeal to you for your kind and generous support.

Where does your money go?

To help needy patients.

Each year more than $1 million from the KKHHEF goes towards helping patients. We hope that by easing the financial burden of these patients who are sick and poor, they can focus on getting well and back on their feet.

Some of the patients that we are helping:

5-year old Cindy* was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, and has been put on the waiting list for a liver transplant. The extended family support is poor. Cindy’s grandfather suffers from dementia and relies on Cindy’s mother. Both parents work very hard to support the needs of the family and to provide a better life for their two children. At one point, Cindy’s mother had to take on two jobs, to earn some extra income for the family. A lot of time and energy is also spent on bringing Cindy to and from the hospital for her follow-ups. KKHHEF provided financial assistance to the family for Cindy’s special milk diet and medication, amounting to about $13,000 for a year.

Kenny* was diagnosed with Rickets when he was just three years old. Being the only child of a single-parent family, his mother had to work, leaving him in his grandmother’s care. Kenny’s condition required medication every four hours to prevent his legs from turning inwards in a bow-legged manner. With dedicated care from his grandmother, Kenny did well until he came down with a rare condition known as Leukodystrophy when he was six years old. Leukodystrophy caused a degeneration of a part of his brain that led him to lose control of his limbs and stiffened his muscles.

With help from KKHHEF, Kenny now has a new wheel-chair with special features that support his body frame well. KKHHEF also supports the family with their expenses on medication, medical consultation and physiotherapy, amounting to about $6,000.

Mdm Chia* is a 58-year old lady who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005. She had a relapse in June 2010 and needed to undergo expensive chemotherapy. Each cycle of chemotherapy cost $2,900.

Mdm Chia is married with two grown-up sons. She is unable to work due to her medical condition. Her husband (a cleaner) and younger son are the main breadwinners of the family. They have limited Medisave as most of it was used for her medical treatment and they have difficulty paying for her chemotherapy treatment.

KKHHEF has been helping with Mdm Chia’s chemotherapy expenses.
