What side effects can
Lugol's Iodine (for MIBG scan)
cause?
Common side effects include:
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort
- Diarrhoea
- Metallic taste, burning or pain in the mouth, increased salivation
Rare but serious side effects include:
- Severe abdominal pain
- Severe nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:
- Swollen face, eyes, lip, tongue
- Difficulty in breathing
- Itchy skin rashes over your whole body
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Inform your healthcare professional if:
- You are allergic to potassium iodide, iodine or any of the other ingredients of this medication
- You are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have severe problems with your kidneys
- You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies
What food or medicine must I avoid when I take
Lugol's Iodine (for MIBG scan)
?
Some medications should also be avoided prior to MIBG scan. These include amlodipine, nifedipine, salbutamol, oxymetazoline, pseudoephedrine, promethazine, tramadol, caffeine, and certain antipsychotics.
