I About The Programme

Name of Programme

Developmental and Behaviour Paediatrics (DBP) Fellowship

Overview

DBP Fellowship is a 12-month training programme run by the faculty of Department of Child Development (DCD). The training in DBP will be enabled through rotation in DCD as well as the other sub-specialties including neurology, Child and Adolescent Mental Wellness Service (CAMWS), genetics, rehabilitation department and others.

Aim of Programme

The purpose of the DBP Fellowship is to train paediatricians to:

• become competent in identification and management of developmental and behavior conditions in children;
• learn effective advocacy for families and children;
• participate in audits and research projects (optional).

Duration of Programme

12 months

Number of Training Places

One to two positions per year in January/July

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the training, the DBP Fellow will be competent in the:

1. identification and management of developmental delays and disorders. This will include the ability to administer and interpret screening tools for evaluating developmental delays, working with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and the family to provide a holistic and family centered care, organize and interpret appropriate investigations.
2. diagnosis and management of specific conditions, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Social Communication Disorder, ADHD, other externalizing and internalizing conditions as well as co-morbid conditions such as feeding difficulties and sleep problems.
3. identification of conditions such as tics, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, visual/hearing impairment and their management, including co-management with appropriate specialists.
4. presentation of cases at departmental teaching sessions/meetings.
5. participation in departmental audit/research project (optional).

Training Methods

This is a hands-on clinical attachment. The DBP Fellow will be rotated to other departments to meet the training competencies including Neurology, CAMWS, Genetics and Rehabilitation departments.

Aims of Assessment

Fellows are required to continually demonstrate the following six competencies throughout the programme:

Evaluation Process

General overall grading system

The general overall grading system evaluates the Fellow’s performance upon completion of the fellowship programme. All Fellows will be given a general overall grading status at the end of the fellowship programme based on the grading criteria requirements incorporating the six competencies based knowledge, skills and performance that Fellows must demonstrate throughout the programme.

 
*Fellows who have attained a USP grade will not be awarded a certificate of successful completion of the programme.

In the event of serious concerns about the Fellow such as breaking the confidentiality of the patients, the department has the right to terminate the training programme of the individual.

III Target Audience and Eligibility Requirements

Target Audience

Paediatricians who come from developing countries, where the training opportunities in DBP are not available.

Pre-requisite/Eligibility Requirement(s)

Candidates must:

• have experience in Paediatrics for at least 2 years, post MBBS or an equivalent qualification;
• have MRCPCH/MMED or an equivalent postgraduate qualification in Paediatrics is preferred;
• be registered as a medical practitioner in the country currently practicing;
• be certified to be of good standing by the Medical Council or equivalent organisation in country of practice.

Course Fees

Course fee will be determined upon application.

Funding

Candidates should be self-funded or have funding from external sources/institutions.

Certification

A certificate of satisfactory completion of the Fellowship will be provided at the end of the training.
