What to expect at a Psychology Session

The first consultation with a psychologist comprises an intake interview to gain a better understanding of the patient’s difficulties. Parents or caregivers are strongly encouraged to accompany children and adolescent patients for their appointments.

Following the intake interview, a treatment plan is typically recommended. As psychological problems are usually rooted in many causes, treatment would usually span across several sessions. Should psychological assessment be required, each session may last two to three hours.

For children and adolescents, parents are actively involved during the assessment and treatment process. Consultation and liaison are also often coordinated with the school, other healthcare professionals and any other relevant stakeholders to better understand the child/adolescent from different perspectives.
