Swabs can be transported to the laboratory at room temperature provided it can reach the laboratory within an hour. Otherwise refrigerate the specimens at 2-8 deg C.

Procedures for collection
1) Endocervical samples: Remove excess mucus from the cervical os using a normal sterile swab and discard. Insert the flocked swab into the cervical canal and gently rotate for 30 seconds. Remove the flocked swab and recap into transport tube. 2) Vaginal samples: Separate skin around vagina. Insert flocked swab about 5 cm into vaginal opening. Rotate swab gently for 30 seconds against the vaginal wall. Remove the flocked swab and re-cap into transport tube. 3) Urine: Collect 10-50 mL of first catch urine. Patient must NOT have urinated for at least 2 hours. Category: Microbiology / Molecular-PCR Tests
