Our multidisciplinary service provides treatment for young people aged 16 and below with eating disorders. Young people referred to us for evaluation of an eating disorder are first seen by an adolescent medicine physician who specialises in eating disorders for a comprehensive assessment and then treatment options are discussed.
Many of our patients require inpatient care to stabilise their physical condition from malnutrition at first presentation. Inpatient care focuses on medical stabilisation and reversing the impact of malnutrition. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team including physicians, specialty nurses, dietitians, and psychologists. Special attention is provided to ensuring the young person receives appropriate nutrition and support and supervision is provided during meals. The psychology team may be involved in care to provide an assessment of the young person’s eating disorder or provide ongoing support to the patient and families.
Outpatient care is suitable for young people who have been assessed by physicians to be stable enough to continue or start with treatment in the outpatient setting. Outpatient treatment is tailored to the needs of the young person and family. The affected young person and their family may have regular outpatient sessions with the psychology team to provide evidence-based psychological treatment for the eating disorder. Moreover, young people will typically see their primary physician at regular intervals to check on their health and the dietitian to discuss any ongoing nutritional concerns.
