NOTE: All specimens must be collected before application of acetic acid or iodine for colposcopy.
1. Cervical samples collected using a cervical brush and placed in Specimen Transport Medium (STM).
2. Freshly collected biopsies 2-5mm in cross section should be placed immediately in 1 mL of STM. Biopsies less than 2mm are not suitable. Biopsies can be transported at 2-30°C overnight but must be stored frozen at -20°C before processing.
3. Cervical samples collected for PAP smear
Specimen Requirement
Types of specimens
1. Cervical specimens that are collected using a cervical sampler that consists of a cervical brush in Specimen Transport Medium (STM). Please call Laboratory Reception for the cervical samplers. Refer to insert on collection and handling. After collection insert brush to transport tube. Snap off the shaft at the score line and cap tube securely.  Sampler front and back
2. Cervical biopsies.
3. Cervical specimens that are collected using a broom-type collection device or brush/spatula combination in ThinPrep PreservCyt solution.
Specimen Storage/Transport
1. STM can be stored up to 2 weeks at room temperature. Specimens to be tested within one week can be stored at 2-8°C. Specimens to be tested within 3 months can be stored at -20°C.
2. Biopsies must be stored at -20°C before testing.
3. Specimens in PreservCyt solutions can be stored at 2-30°C for up to 3 months. Do not freeze PreservCyt solutions.
