The Paediatric Cardiothoracic Unit at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital has been at the forefront of paediatric heart surgery in Singapore since 1997. Since then, we have grown in size and volume to become the largest unit in Singapore with the best surgical outcomes.
Our team treats the full spectrum of congenital and acquired heart disease, including the rarest and most complex congenital heart defects. We also specialise in tracheal surgery, thoracic surgery (including video assisted thoracoscopic surgeries) as well as chest wall reconstruction.
We work in collaboration with specialists from other departments and units at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and our multidisciplinary approach ensures the highest quality of care for our patients.
Our care team includes cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists, trained intensive care unit nurses, physiotherapists and radiologists - all of whom are specifically trained in treating paediatric heart conditions. As a team, we regularly discuss and formulate comprehensive care plans, to look after the many aspects of our patient’s health that is affected when he/she has a heart condition.
With advances in both medical and surgical care, people who are born with serious congenital heart defects are now surviving long into adulthood. Because few defects are permanently “cured,” these individuals require lifelong follow-up care. We have a unique programme in Singapore that ensures a smooth transition in clinical care to the adult congenital heart programme in the National Heart Centre, Singapore, as our paediatric patients’ transition into their adulthood.
Cardiac Surgery Success rates
Despite treating some of the most serious congenital heart conditions that a child can have, we have had excellent success rates that are comparable to some of the best units in the world.
