About Doctor

Associate Professor Matthias Maiwald is a Senior Consultant and the Head of Microbiology at KK Women's and Children's Hospital in Singapore.

He previously worked at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, then at Stanford University, USA, and then at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

He holds a German board certification in medical microbiology, a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology (D/ABMM).

His areas of interest include microbiological aspects relevant to women’s and children’s health, molecular detection and characterization of fastidious and emerging pathogens, and infection control with an emphasis on hand hygiene and skin antisepsis.

He holds an adjunct academic appointment with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and another adjunct academic appointment with the Duke-National University of Singapore (Duke-NUS) Graduate School of Medicine.

He has a publication record of over 170 articles, including journal articles and medical textbooks chapters.

He is a recipient of the 2023 COVID-19 Resilience Medal awarded by the Republic of Singapore, for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
