Clinical Fellowship in Women's Mental Health & Perinatal Psychiatry

Advanced Specialty Training Programme

The Psychological Medicine Service is an approved accredition site for Advance Specialty Training (Psychiatry) by Joint Committee on Specialist Training (JCST)

Psychiatric trainees interested to train in women psychiatry will be rotated to run the outpatient clinics and do the inpatient obstetric-liaison consultative psychiatry - as per service caseload with direct supervision and case discussion for learning round for each case, and guidance in management.

Objectives

This programme aims to provide the fellow with knowledge, skills and understanding of the following areas:

1. The psychiatric disorders, and distinctive clinical features, complicating maternities
2. The management of these conditions including the use of psychotropic medication in pregnancy and lactation
3. Risk identification and planning of care
4. Working within a multidisciplinary team and a comprehensive, integrated perinatal mental health service (with occupational therapy, psychological therapy, social work)
5. Obstetric and gynaecology liaison service – training in handling blue-letter consultations
6. Psychological disorders relating to gynaecological illness such as gynae-oncology, chronic pelvic pain, female sexuality disorders
7. The interface with primary care and adult general psychiatry
8. Case management model in women’s mental health
9. Service planning at a local and national level
10. Developing skills and experience in facilitating and conducting support groups
11. Developing skills and experience in presentation, teaching and public speaking.

Course Contents

1. Four to five clinic sessions per week – with direct supervision and case discussion for learning round each case, and guidance in management
2. Liaison consultation rounds daily as required
3. Hands-on training in conducting support groups – held fortnightly
4. Involvement in clinical research projects – to be discussed further with trainee, as per interest
5. Training in giving public education and educational talks
6. Preparing educational materials, and experience in writing to enhance mental health literacy of public.
