Specimen Requirement	Stool Send no more than two specimens per patient without prior consultation with microbiologist. There is limited yield provided by additional specimens. Do not send specimens from inpatients after the third hospital day, without prior consultation with microbiologist. Test stool for Clostridiodes difficile toxin for all patients with clinically significant diarrhea and a history of antibiotic exposure. Consider C. difficile testing as an alternative to routine microbiologic studies for inpatients after the third hospital day. Positive test results for Clostridiodes difficile do not correlate well with disease in young children. Follow relevant guidance on the testing of paediatric patients.
