Maternal Fetal Medicine

All our patients enjoy a high level of coordinated care by a team of specialists in Maternal Fetal Medicine. These include obstetricians, clinical nurses, genetic counsellors and neonatologists.

Range of Services

Our Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine specialises in the management of high risk obstetrics and the screening of fetal anomalies, and is a tertiary referral centre for complicated pregnancies.

KK Fetal Centre (KKFC)

Our Centre offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and counselling services focused on the assessment and management of the fetus as a patient. These services are designed to detect, monitor, and treat fetal conditions throughout pregnancy in collaboration with our obstetric, neonatal, and genetic teams.

Obstetric Ultrasound Service

  • First Trimester US examination
    • Viability and dating scan (6–10 weeks)
    • Assessment of multiple pregnancies and chorionicity
  • Early fetal anatomy survey at 15-16 weeks in high risk pregnancies
  • Fetal Anomaly Scans including screening for structural anomalies
  • Uterine artery Doppler for preeclampsia and growth restriction risk
  • 3rd trimester Growth scans
  • Doppler Ultrasound scans for fetal well-being in High Risk Pregnancies
  • Multiple Pregnancies surveillance for TTTS, TAPS & fetal growth restriction

Prenatal diagnosis and counselling by experienced Maternal-fetal consultants of patients with Fetal Anomalies

Thalassaemia screening, prenatal diagnosis and counselling

Down Syndrome screening, prenatal diagnosis and counselling

    2. Interpretation of genetic test results and recurrence risk

Fetal Medicine Clinic Follow-Up and Perinatal Coordination

  • Cervical length measurement for high risk pregnancies
  • Serial growth and Doppler follow-up for high-risk fetuses
  • Multidisciplinary meetings with neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, geneticists and appropriate specialists for antenatal care
  • Perinatal palliative care for fetuses with life-limiting conditions
  • Postnatal correlation and feedback into the fetal diagnosis pathway

Perinatal Audit & Epidemiology Unit

  • Perinatal epidemiology relating to trends of diseases of pregnancy, the mother and the fetus
  • Evidence based medicine relating to obstetrics and management of care of high risk pregnancies
  • Perinatal audit relating to stillbirths, perinatal mortality and perinatal morbidity

 

Obstetric Day Assessment Centre

Our Obstetric Day Assessment Centre has evolved into an outpatient alternative for women with complicated pregnancies and pregnant patients with hypertension and/or diabetes.
 
These patients would previously have required hospitalisation. Now they receive the same high standard of obstetric care while enjoying the benefits of an outpatient status, such as no hospitalisation costs and reduced disruption to their work, family and social lives. Hypertensive and Diabetic obstetric patients now receive an extensive evaluation and self-help management guidelines.
 
Dedicated nurses will also provide phone consultations and phone reviews to assist patients in managing their diabetes in pregnancy.
