Fresh cord blood must be transferred immediately to EDTA tube. Thereafter, gently invert tube 10 times immediately after blood sample has been taken. This is extremely important to avoid micro-clotting (before and after incubation with EDTA) and thus ensures that the results are reliable.
Batch testing at 0800 hrs and 1500 hrs
G6PD activity < 1.5 U/g Hb indicates severe deficiency (WHO Class I / II variants)
G6PD activity 1.5 to 8.7 U/g Hb indicates partial deficiency (WHO Class III variants)
