About Doctor

Dr Alvin Chang is Director, Quality, Safety and Risk Management and Senior Consultant, Department of Neonatology, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). He is a Clinical Asst Professor in Paediatrics at the DUKE-NUS School of Medicine, Singapore and the National University of Singapore and an Adjunct Asst Professor in Paediatrics at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

He chairs the Hospital Quality and Patient Safety Standards and Co-chairs the Patient Safety and Risk Council, KKH. His team contextualised the Joint Commission International standards in KKH leading to changed mindsets utilizing standards for continuous improvement and conducts regular Root Cause Analysis. This further led to his involvement as Principal ensure Safer System (ESS) Leader in the MOH-ESS initiative towards high reliability in healthcare. He is a faculty of the SingHealth Institute for Patient Safety and Quality (IPSQ) graduate programmes in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality- contributed to the TeamSPEAK, TeamSTEPPS, TeamCHOICE workshops and the Masters in Safety and Healthcare Quality degree.

Using quality improvement tools, he led a team to reduce chronic lung diseases of infancy in 2013 that won awards. He is President- Singapore Paediatric Society (since 2020), Standing Committee- Asia Pacific Paediatric Association and Council of Delegates- International Pediatric Association. He was the President of the Healthcare Quality society of Singapore (HQSS) between 2019 and 2023. He had published in peer-reviewed journals, including Cochrane reviews, in quality, safety and neonatal topics. He served as Faculty of Singapore Healthcare Improvement Network, a collaborative program to reduce harm and is one of few Instructor-Mentors based in Singapore of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Neonatal Resuscitation training.
