To help diagnose respiratory ailments, spirometry testing, which involves forceful expulsion of air into a spirometer is required. However, due to it being a potential aerosol generating procedure, spirometry was suspended in the early phase of the Covid-19 pandemic. Without a spirometry, caregivers were concerned on the potential effects on clinical decision making and diagnosis of their child's condition.
In collaboration with the Department of Medical Innovation and Care Transformation at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, SingHealth Medical Technology Office, SingHealth Office for Innovation, the Institute of Bioengineering and Bioimaging, A*STAR, and SingHealth Duke-NUS Medical School, the team designed and built the Spirobooth, a novel self-contained, purpose-built booth to perform spirometry safely. Using features such as high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter and an automated ultraviolet (UVC) disinfection system, the Spirobooth allows for spirometry to be performed safely, improving healthcare operations.
