Specswab - Novel Cervicovaginal Fluid Collection Device

Synonym(s):

The device integrates sample collection and transport into a single system, enabling cervicovaginal fluid to be collected through a simple, user-friendly process. Designed with patient comfort in mind, it aims to reduce the discomfort and invasiveness associated with conventional speculum-guided sampling while supporting reliable sample collection for downstream laboratory analysis.

The innovation was developed through a collaboration between KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and Map Plastics Pte Ltd, with the resulting intellectual property protected through patents and co-owned by KKH and Map Plastics.

A pilot study involving over 100 participants demonstrated the device's ability to collect samples suitable for molecular and diagnostic testing, while achieving high user acceptance and preference compared with conventional collection methods.

Potential Applications

  • Cervical cancer and HPV screening
  • Women's health diagnostics
  • Pregnancy-related biomarker testing
  • Vaginal microbiome analysis
  • Future decentralised and self-collection testing workflows

Key Features

  • Less invasive and more comfortable sampling experience
  • Potential for self-collection outside clinical settings
  • Integrated collection and transport design
  • Designed to minimise sample contamination
  • Suitable for a wide range of diagnostic applications

This innovation aims to improve access to women's health screening and diagnostics by enabling a more patient-friendly approach to cervicovaginal sample collection.
