Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a special X-ray examination of the womb and fallopian tubes. These are usually not well seen on plain X-ray examinations.

We hope the following information will help you understand the procedure better and make your visit to Diagnostic Imaging a pleasant one.

What to expect during the examination?
Please empty your bladder before the procedure.

You will be required to lie on the X-ray couch throughout the examination. After cleaning the vagina with antiseptic solution, the radiologist will insert a fine tube (catheter) through the vagina into the womb (please refer to the diagram). A small amount of contrast medium (X-ray dye) will be administered through the tube to outline the inner surface of the womb and the fallopian tubes. You may experience some lower abdominal cramps at this stage.

The radiologist will observe the flow of the contrast medium under X-ray and document the procedure. If you feel any discomfort/pain during or after the procedure, please inform our staff.

The examination will take approximately 30 mins.

Are there any special preparations for the test?

1. No sexual intercourse from the 1^st day of your menses until after the HSG exam.
2. Your menses must be completely clear on the day of your appointment (no spotting or bleeding); your appointment may be rescheduled otherwise.
3. Perform a urine pregnancy test 1 day before or on the day of your appointment; take a photo of the negative test result and present it to our staff during registration.
4. You may experience some discomfort after the exam, do arrange for someone to accompany you to/from your appointment.
5. HSG is a minimally invasive procedure; consent is required. If you are below 21 years old, please bring a parent/guardian.
6. HSG requires the use of iodinated contrast, inform your doctor or our staff if you have any history of iodinated contrast allergy.

What to expect after the examination?
Slight vaginal bleeding or spotting is expected over the next few days, avoid intercourse or tampon use during this time.

Complications (e.g. infection) may occur in a small percentage of patients. If you experience any excessive bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, or severe abdominal pain after leaving the hospital, return immediately to KKH Urgent O&G Centre, Basement 1, Women’s Tower.

Inform the doctor or clinic staff that you had a HSG procedure done.

Radiation dose
The radiation dose you will receive is small. As such, there are no side effects from the radiation.

Will I need to be admitted?
The examination does not require hospital admission. It can be performed on an outpatient basis. If you are admitted to the hospital on the appointment day, inform the ward staff to contact DDII.

Important points to note:

• The procedure must be done after your menses ends, and by the 12th day of your cycle (counting from the 1^st day of your menses). After the 12th day, the lining of your uterus usually thickens and may result in confusing findings that reduce the accuracy of the test. Performing this test by the 12th day of the cycle would also avoid inadvertent interference with a pregnancy.
•  Inform the doctor or radiographer if you are:
  • Allergic to latex (rubber), any medication or antiseptic lotions;
  • Pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant
• Do not carry any valuables, jewellery or excessive cash with you during your appointment.
