Glossary

Common terms used during the elective surgery.

Cervagem/Misoprostol

A drug used for cervical dilation and softening in preparation for gynaecological surgical procedures.


DS (Day Surgery)

Patients will be discharged on the same day as their operation.


Elective/Scheduled Surgery

Elective surgery is a non-emergency surgical intervention that is scheduled in advance.


GA (General Anaesthesia)

A medically induced state of controlled unconsciousness which patients neither feel pain nor aware of their surroundings.


IV (Intravenous)

A small catheter inserted into vein for fluids or medication administration.


LA (Local Anaesthesia)

A technique which involves in the use of an anaesthetic agent on specific area of the body which resulting in the loss of sensation confined to that region while patients remain conscious.


OT (Operating Theatre)

A sterile environment equipped for surgical operations.


OT Reception (Operating Theatre Reception)

A designated holding area for patients’ final verification processes prior surgery.


PACU (Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit)

A specialized recovery area where patients are closely monitored after surgery until they regain consciousness and their condition stabilizes.


Porter

A hospital staff member who is responsible for the transportation of patients between various locations within the healthcare settings. 


SDA (Same-Day Admission)

Patients will be admitted to ward after a surgical procedure.


Sedation

The administration of medications to induce a calming or drowsy state in patients, thereby facilitating medical procedures with minimal discomfort or anxiety.


Spinal Anaesthesia

A form of regional anaesthesia which involves in the injection of anaesthetic agent into the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord, resulting in the loss of sensation and motor function in the lower half of the body.
